About the project...

If I mention someone's name eg. Samuel Parris, do I have to explain who they are in my essay, or do I add a footnote with a brief explanation? Or do I just leave it and just assume that the reader knows who I'm talking about? I don't want to take up heaps of words by providing an explanation, but I also don't want the reader to be wondering who the hell it is that I'm talking about. It makes sense in my head 'cause I've done the research. Just let me know :) For the draft I'm handing in tomorrow I'll just footnote it and I can be berated for it later if I'm wrong.
